The norm in shoes.
Let me explain. I live in a small town, with people who don't travel nearly enough. Here, you're considered stylish if you can put jeans and a t shirt together. Who's heard of color-blocking? What in the world is Neiman Marcus? I myself probably wouldn't have known if I had not discovered the world of fashion blogs. Most people here are stuck in a rut. Flip flops, jeans, and a graphic t-shirt is the basic uniform. The Buckle is the most popular store for teens; Chico's is a good place for adult women. But what about the other options out there?"What the heck are those? Are they shoes?"
For instance, one day, I wore a lace crop top paired with a skirt. And people glared, askance, at me. It's not that I exposed too much skin; I wore a solid tank underneath, and the skirt reached to my knees. It was just the fact that I broke the unspoken rules of what to wear. And people judged me for it. A crop top, with a skirt?? I laugh to think of what would happen if somebody daring like Tavi moved here. Her clothes break boundaries normally, but to wear them here? A riot would probably ensue.I'm not suggesting that there aren't daring people here. There are people who dress in beautiful clothes. However, most people, including me sometimes, are too afraid to rock the boat to wear what they want to. If they want to. I haven't seen anything high-waisted, nothing long and flowing, no flatforms, pretty much nothing currently trendy except for jean leggings and moccasin flats. Both of those are slowly going out of style elsewhere, but they're still going strong here. I know people know about those other styles. Magazines mention them constantly, and the people here love reading magazines. But they're just too afraid to embrace the trend.
This reflection made me really think about small towns. There are thousands of them everywhere. Are they all like mine? Street style photographers focus on large cities for a reason, it seems; the small ones have little to tempt them with. Stores like Zara, Mango, even Forever 21 avoid us. Our shops have little variety, because they don't want to try to sell trendy items only to have nobody buy them. It seems the only way to get anything high-fashion is to buy online, where you can't try it on. Are small towns destined to forever be in their rut?
Now, hear me out. I really don't want to see that happen. If you live in a small town, I would love for you to try rocking the boat. Start small. Maybe insert a fruit-patterned shirt into your outfit, or get a pair of wide-legged trousers. Then, build from there! Wear what you want, where you want, when you want. Get out of that rut, and rock the boat! I promise that I will, to the best of my ability, attempt this too. Let's go show those townspeople what style really is! (:

I live in a small town, a village of 800 and work in a town of a bit over 110, 000. I travel a lot so I tend to only shop when I am in a big city or online. Some sites provide measurements of the garments so it's pretty easy to determine how something will fit. As long as you know your body type well.
The great hung about small-town shopping tends to be the fabulous inexpensive things you can find in second hand stores. I have snagged some amazing vintage furs That way.
Lastly i just wear whatever I want/feel like because I'd feel hideous if tried to dress like everyone else. I don't care if people don't like what I'm wearing, I'm wearing it because i like it! Lol. Also I think in small towns if people are used to seeing you then they get used to seeing something other than plaid shirts and jeans :)
I am glad that you do wear what you want! (: Second hand store vintage... hmm... I'll have to look into that! I'm not sure if my town has any vintage clothing stores, Goodwill maybe, but that's a great idea! (: Thanks for commenting!
I don't live in a small town but I do live in a small city, New Orleans. Sometimes I feel like this place is a small town, which I love and is partially the reason why I live here. On the negative side it is easy to get lazy and assimilate but on the flip side it is easy to look stylish and put together as long as you make just a little bit of effort!
Hm, I guess it's different in USA and in Europe and etc. I live in a small town, but this is also a small country, so it's no trouble to go shopping to the capital (2hours on bus, even faster by car). But it is true that in small towns people are less daring. However, I assume that in my county (Latvia) people are still more fashion conscious than in small towns at USA. Most of the women (not only middle class and up)do their hair, their nails, dress up to walk to the store to buy bread, walking around in shorts and t-shirt is a big no-no - that's proper attire only for gadening here. However, latvians are known for good taste, but not for their daring. In general we lean towards elegant and classic style.
I do hope that women around here will not become t-shirts+jeans/shorts=what else do you need? Taking care with ones appearance is a good tradition, no matter if someone says that people around here pay too much attention to such things. I think it's nice that sometimes you can't tell that the woman has little money, because she certainly doesn't look it!
Mmm... I did live in a smaller town when I was younger, and I did see a huge difference fashion-wise when I moved to a bigger one for high school. I remember how the 'popular girls' whom we called 'snobs' at my old school didn't wear anything beyond jeans-and-a-t-shirt, and yet, only because these were bought in more expensive stores, they were supposed to be more fashion-daring, or something. :D When I moved to the big city, I realized how close-minded they actually were, thinking themselves the center of the universe when in fact, nothing could be farther from reality. Anyway, you're so right about this! I'd really advise you to just dress the way you feel like it, because even if you're in a bigger town, people en general will always wear an uniform. It's always up to you not to fit with that group and being individual, and having a personal sense of style will always be a choice you have. Let them stare! ;)
Haha, same here! In middle and high school, all the "popular girls" wear sweats every day. ?? Let them stare, indeed! (:
omg. PERFECTION. I grew up outside of Boston, MA in a town like that. I'd make my own clothes out of bright fabrics, and wear peep toe pumps to school....oh the stares.
Now, I live in NYC and my BF is trying to convince me to move back to suburban Massachusetts. I showed him your post as the reason as to why I can't.
thanks so much for sharing your point of view!

Just dropping by (via the IFB link list) to say how much I love this post. I'm from a fairly large suburban town, and all this still happens on some level. (I get stares just for wearing a plain *skirt* out somewhere, what.) The teenage crowd still seems to be trying, and there's definitely a subset of adult women who at least dress up their jeans with nice tops and heels, but that's about it.
I'm kind of jealous of city bloggers who can still blend in whilst showing their somewhat more offbeat tastes.
Very nice and entertaining article. Thanks for sharing! Go and show the small town folks where fashion is at!
I am so glad that I came across this post. From what it sounds like I live in an even smaller town. The nearest Buckle is about three hours away.
I lived in the metro Detroit area for a year where I came across people wearing just about whatever they wanted from vintage to the top fashions.
Then I moved back home...Which I love. I love the country. But yes, I am trying to rock the boat. I am trying to wear different things and I do get that judging up and down look from other women, like "what is that thing over there in neon?"
The real test will be when I go back to school in the fall...So, thank you for this post and I hope you go out there and challenge those small town folks, because I am about to go out dressed in a bright pink satin slip worn as a dress with a jean shirt worn over and belted at the waist.
I'm so glad you wrote this post and brought the small town problem to everyones attention. This is a great idea for small town people who might be discouraged to express themselves. I live in a small town as well, (in Mississippi) and It's the EXACT same way here. Everyone that 'thinks' they are in style literaly is about 2-3yrs OUT of style! In high school people would give me weird looks becuase I was never one of those girls to wear those cheap (yet over priced) dresses from the local boutiques that 'think' they carry all the great new trends. It wasn't until I moved to New York when I was 19 that I realized those girls from my town are the ones that look like idiots becuase their trashy rinestone infested jeans and purses are so not in! Since I moved back I try harder than ever to express myself how I truly want to, and eventually started my blog where I could meet people with the same style and intrests as me. Keeping your blog will be a great outlet and support that you can't find in your town.
Much love,

I'm actually about to move to a small town for graduate school and this article made me smile! I have a box that I've packed up already that says "this clothing is too fabulous for my new home" but I think I will wear my 5 inch wedges and fun prints anyway! :) I'll liven up the town a bit hehe
